It was originally a Major Records/Valentino Sound Effect called "Single Duck, which can be found on Major Records - Sound Effects Volume 6. It's first known appearance was in a Calvin and the Colonel episode called "Sycamore Lodge".
In 1990, The Hollywood Edge added this sound to The Premiere Edition Volume 1 library. In 2014, Sound Ideas acquired it after the bankruptcy of The Hollywood Edge.
Today, it's used in more than 100 pieces of media.

Trivia
- This sound effect is known for its use for character takes in Spongebob Squarepants, usually in a high pitch. It was used for takes and random movements in a similar fashion in The Ren & Stimpy Show's Horta Editorial episodes.
- According to a reply to omelettecounty on Tumblr , Maxwell Atoms described of this sound: "There were effects that I came to ask for by name, like “the duck”, “the baby goat”, “the gurgle” (I think that’s the one you’re asking about), and many more."
